⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉
Character: Coran Hieronymus Wimbleton Smythe
Age: 600+
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: End of season 2
Background: Coran was the advisor to King Alfor of Altea before the Galra lead by Zarkon attacked the planet. He along with Princess Allura were placed in a suspended stasis for over ten thousand years. They were awaken by the arrival of the new Paladins that will fly the lions who can form Voltron. Unfortunately, they also wake up to find that the planet Altea was destroyed and they are likely the only Alteans left.
Now he joins Princess Allura and the Voltron Paladins in their continued fight against Zarkon. He helps keep the Castle of Lions that doubles as a space ship flying. Monitoring shields and weapons, diverting power where it's most needed, and when Allura is away he takes over flying the ship as well. He also helps with strategies. His knowledge and life experiences often helping the group to come up with plans and if not the plan itself the resources to get everything done.
Personality: Coran is an energetic man and occasionally some people may call him a bit spastic in nature. Only Coran is no fool and when he needs to be serious he works with laser focus attention. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and especially the Princess Allura. Acting most of the time as a loving and well meaning Uncle. Coran would never leave a friend or ally behind. Often even putting himself in danger if it means being able to rescue someone.
Even in dangerous situations Coran will stand and face the danger head on. He is very brave and can show his skills as a solider when it comes to a fight. It doesn't matter if Coran is terrified he will stand to protect his family, friends, home, and those who can't protect themselves.
He is not only brave, but he is also a proud man. Proud of who he is, of being an Altean, of his ancestry (his direct family having built the Castle of Lions), and proud of his servitude to King Alfor. He is also proud of his role in the team when it comes to the Voltron Paladins, but he would be lying if he said he didn't wish he were also chosen to pilot one of the lions. It would be a dream to Coran if he were able to also pilot a lion as King Alfor once did. Coran will not take insults to himself and especially the royal family lightly. Ready to jump on the defence.
This is partly due to the way that Coran tends to wear his emotions directly on his sleeve. Most of the time reacting with his emotions and letting them shine though. Never to the point of letting them get the better of him. He is capable of reigning himself in when instructed by the princess or by necessity of the situation as it changes. The way he doesn't hide his emotions also leads to Coran usually speaking before he really thinks about what he's about to say. It's rare that he intends to hurt people with what he's saying, but sometimes it is a bit blunt without Coran realizing it.
Coran not only cares about the people in his life, but he has a high respect for the universe he lives in. He treats each planet he visits with respect and gets upsets when he sees someone disrespecting or hurting a world. He loves even dangerous animals and would rather learn how to live with them rather than fear or hurt them. It’s how he became an expert on weblums, which are giant dead planet eating creatures. They’re also very dangerous, but Coran doesn’t see them that way. What he sees is a creature doing its part in the natural order of living.
Most of the time Coran is a pretty happy-go-lucky sort of guy. The one to lighten the mood when the tension needs to be broken, but he’s much more than comic relief. He can be counted on as someone who will listen when you may be feeling down. He takes emotional problems seriously. He often has some sort of advice from his own experiences or he knows a story of someone else’s that he can share in an effort to help. Or at least try to make you smile again.
An example of this was when Lance was feeling homesick for Earth and Coran took the time to share his feelings of losing his planet as well. The things he missed. He also brought up a map for Lance to see Earth on that map. He didn’t try to belittle how Lance felt about missing home when his own home had been destroyed, but instead listened and tried to empathise with him.
Having watched Princess Allura grow up he has a very close connection with her. This can lead him to being too protective of the princess at times. Such as when the group is going to a swap planet and he refuses to let Allura join them. Thinking it would be too dangerous and wanting her to stay home and rest. It turned out to be just a normal mall so she could have gone the whole time. Not that Coran thinks that way. He still feels that he made the right decision.
As much as Coran wishes to keep Princess Allura safe he also knows that he can’t keep her home forever. He is always walking that line parents do between keeping their loved ones safe and letting them grow up. Over the course of the show Coran comes to trust Allura more and more to join the Paladins on dangerous missions. Seeing the need for her to join them and having his full faith in her abilities. He knows that she is an adult capable of making her own choices and for the most part he trusts her to make the right choice.
Abilities: Coran doesn't have too many special abilities. As an Altean he is long lived and has chameleon like abilities. Which means he can do things like change his size and skin tone. Nothing overly drastic and it's not something he would normally use.
His true ability is his life experience. Coran has put his 600+ years of life to good use. Every time Coran mentions some small event or item in the show you can be pretty sure that it will eventually come up again. Maybe not in that same season, but it will eventually come up. Coran is full of knowledge and while he may not always be the best at explaining or putting into words those experiences, he has lived it and his advice is something people should not ignore.
Alignment: Thras. As Coran has proven time and again that even when he's terrified he will stand is ground and face a challenge with courage. Part of that is his soldier training, but most is just the type of person Coran is.

Revisions
Here are the revisions that were requested! I will touch on a couple things that were already mentioned in the original app to help make points or because I felt I could touch upon them better.
There are a couple wiki links for Coran. They are here and here, but they don’t really have much information so I wish to expand on them.
Background
In ways that Coran contributed to the story in seasons 1 and 2 is more of a support character and support role. When he and Allura are awaken after 10,000 years he was the main person who got the Castle of Lions space worthy again after it had been grounded and pretty much ignored for those ten thousand years. He’s the one who knows the castle almost completely in and out. There are still things even he doesn’t know about the castle, but it was his grandfather that built it and he’s the one who spent the most time in the castle out of those who are currently using it.
Coran doesn’t usually join the direct fighting, however, on occasion he does bring the ship in to provide back up. He also is the one who controls the ship’s particle barrier to protect it from enemy fire. Princess Allura is the one who usually drives the ship and will command him where and when to fire, but when she’s not on the ship Coran is more than capable of doing these things on his own. When she was captured by the Galra Coran came in with the ship, guns blazing, to take back his princess.
He is also the man who usually has some sort of world history or knowledge that will help the team. He knows how to perform the ceremony to collect crystals from Balmeras. These are what power the Castle of Lions. He knows how to get scaultrite from a Weblum. These are used to make the lenses that allow them to make and use wormholes. Coran was alive when the Lions were first built and the first time they came together to become Voltron.
One other big way that he's helped over the course of the two seasons is he was the one overseeing and helping build the largest wormhole device ever made to be used in their big plan against Zarkon. By taking command over the building this allowed the other paladins to collect the other necessary components to complete their plans. He was also able to offer his expertise with taking care of the smaller wormhole to the bigger version.I’ll touch a bit more on some of the ways he contributed to the story in the following update to his personality. Focusing on the strength and weakness in the show.
Personality:
Coran has several strength and weakness during Voltron: Legendary Defender. One of his strengths is how quickly he can bounce back from situations and always seems to have spare energy. Even if a Galra ship is blasting away at the Castle and he’s shouting out systems that are falling offline as soon as someone suggests another plan he can rein in his panic quickly to do his part. The bravest man would be nervous and frightened when facing the possibility of their death so Coran is not weaker for not being stoned face, but being able to put all those worries to the side and not allowing them to stop him from doing his part in the fight is a true strength.
The best example of this is during season one when a Galra commander, Sendak, attempts to take over the castle. He does this by sending in a bomb that destroys the castle’s crystal power source. During the explosion Lance throws himself in front of Coran to protect him from the blast. Lance ends up being seriously hurt, the castle being without power so they can’t get the Lions out of the castle, and their new allies’ village is being attacked by Galra as well. Everyone, understandably, panics; how were they going to stop all these problems happening at once?
Despite still being lightly injured in the blast Coran takes charge. He doesn’t have a plan exactly, but he gets the team to stop panicking and start thinking of the tasks at hand. To get out of this situation they need to get the power back on. That will get the healing pods for Lance working and also let the Lions out. They need a new crystal. This requires a ship that can go get one. Luckily Pidge can provide one and this gets the team focused aon finding solutions instead of focusing on what is wrong.
Luckily for the team Coran can be a wealth of knowledge. This is at times both a strength and a weakness. For example he knew where to get the crystal that was needed to power the ship again. Because of his knowledge of Balmeras where the crystals come from they were able to quickly find where to get a new one which also led the team to meet Shay and her people who were in slavery under the Galra.
Other times his knowledge can hurt the team. A particular example from the show is when Zarkon appears to be tracking the team and the relentless pursuit is taking a toll on not only the people, but the ship too. Pidge actually suggests right away the way that Zarkon is tracking them. Namely through the Black Lion that he use to pilot as a paladin, but Coran brushes this suggestion away. He says that there is no way a paladin can connect to a lion from such a great distance away. (They were several light years away so it’s hard to blame him.) Of course, Pidge is eventually shown to be right, but not until after Princess Allura and Keith are put in danger.
Sometimes when Coran does get some information wrong it’s because his information is painfully out of date. He at times forgets that he’s been asleep for 10,000 years. For example; while they were trying to outrun Zarkon during his relentless pursuit the lenses used for the castle to be able to use wormholes were damaged. Coran suggests going to a swap moon to get new ones. A place he remembers as being so dangerous he refuses to allow Allura to come with them. Once they arrive at the actual swap moon it turns out to be an ordinary mall these days.
Despite the clear evidence in front of him that things had change drastically from what he remembered Coran stubbornly insists the mall is still a dangerous place. While the others ditch their terrible disguises that Coran put together for them he stays in his the whole time. He also treats the help desk person as if she knows where to find the black market and only grows frustrated when she has no idea what he’s talking about. Storming off thinking that she was playing dumb instead.
In the end he does find what they need because he didn’t lose focus in the mall like the others did, but he could have found it without the disguise. Coran rarely gets too badly punished in the show when he does get things wrong. This is partly because he’s the comic relief of the show, but mostly because he’s also very confident. Even if he gets something wrong he tends to shrug it off. At worse being embarrassed for a few moments. Being wrong means he can correct himself in the future. He can learn, grow, and then laugh about it. Like, remember that time they all nearly died when they tried to wormhole using temporary lenses by standing in the chamber and holding them? Hahaha, wasn’t that a great time? Lance you twitched out of place and nearly died! Hilarious!!!
Coran being energetic in this way can also be a weakness. When he sets his mind on something he can at times become a bit blinded to those around him. A plan that might kill them all, but needs to be done? He's not going to question it and just go for it. Maybe without fully explaining the situation to those joining him in it. He can chatter on about alien creatures and use words/terms that the others may not understand or have any point of reference for. Never stopping to think about the people who can't follow along with what he's talking about. This can lead to communication issues at times which can lead people into dangerous situations like replacing an import ship part incorrectly or a misinterpretation that an animal is friendly when Coran actually means it's really dangerous.Coran has also been an emotional support for the team in both season 1 and 2. Mostly to Princess Allura who he watched grow from a baby to the leader she is by the end of season 2. He is there as a comforting figure when she is homesick for her father and their planet they lost. He even helps her to break from a mind control she was under from a Galra virus that had spread through the Castle of Lions. She was thinking she was on Altea; it was Coran who told her to smell the flowers and realise they didn’t smell at all like the flowers they knew. This allowed her to break out of the spell before they were driven into an exploding star.
Princess Allura isn’t the only one who gets Coran’s emotional support. He will offer it to any of the paladins. Either by them coming to him or if he notices that they may need it. Such as when during a party he sees the usually very social Lance leave on his own looking upset. Coran follows the boy to speak with him so he’s not left on his own.
Despite any flaws he may have Coran has proven to be important member to Team Voltron and has help to defend the universe!
